With the summer season comes hot days and sometimes hot nights. There’s nothing worse than trying to stay cool in the summer heat. While many families will use air conditioners during the summer season, they often increase utility costs. I love the idea of using creative ways to beat the summer heat instead, so today I’m sharing my top 10 ways to beat the summer heat without using an air conditioner.
Drink More Water
Water is free and an easily accessible way to stay hydrated during the summer heat. A cold glass of water not only keeps your body hydrated, but it allows you to cool down your body temperature during the high summer heat.
Use Ceiling Fans
If you have ceiling fans in your home, they are cheaper to operate than air conditioners and can bring a nice cool breeze through your entire home. Be sure to have your windows open and ceiling fans on to stir the cooler air around to beat the summer heat.
Make Use of Box Fans
If you face your box fan or window fan out so that it pulls the air out of your bedroom, rather than pushing air in, it will keep your bedroom cooler at night. This is an easy way to beat the summer heat without using expensive air conditioners.
Cook Outside
The last thing you want to do during the high summer heat is cook inside and heat that house up even more. Start using your grill and outdoor cooking methods during the summer season. This is one reason to look into building an outdoor kitchen. This will ensure you keep your home as a cool as possible.
Invest in Umbrellas
Enjoying the outdoors is a wonderful pass time during the summer season, but sometimes it’s difficult to get a shady, cool spot Invest in some outdoor umbrellas to keep cool. Outdoor umbrellas come in all shapes and sizes, you can have them for your patio table or favorite backyard corner.
Ice and Cold Water
It’s important to know your body’s cooling points, the wrist, and neck. Apply an ice pack or cold water to your wrists or neck area so that you reach the pulse points. These pulse points will cool your body down when a cold towel, ice pack or water is placed on them.
Sun Blocker Curtains
There are many curtains on the market that work as sun blockers. Use these light blocking curtains in your home during the hottest of days. Blocking the sunlight from entering your home amidst the summer heat will keep your cool at a reasonable temperature.
Incandescent Bulbs
Change your light bulbs in the home for incandescent bulbs, as they put off less heat than other style light bulbs. These light bulbs emit 90 percent less heat and use 75 percent less energy than their competitive bulb options.
Wear Light Clothing
If you didn’t know, darker clothing attracts the sunlight. This means wearing lighter clothing during the summer heat will help reflect the heat away from you when the sun is shining down. Lighter clothing will help you feel cooler without much effort.
Go For a Dip
Cooling off in a local river, pond or pool during the summer season is a fun way to beat the heat. Gather up some friends and enjoy a little tie in the water with laughter, conversations, and some physical exercise as you all swim around in the cool water.
There you have it, 10 ways to beat the summer heat in the last of these dog days of summer, both inside and outside. Summer is a great time to relax and enjoy time with your family and friends. I hope my tips help you keep cool during your summer fun adventures.
Feel free to holler if you are close to the farm, we can take a break and head down to the creek to cool off!

Callie
